How to make a pivot table online
- Open a file: CSV, Excel or JSON. Or click “Try sample data” for a small sales dataset.
- Rows: the field to group by, such as region or product. Add a second level with “then”.
- Columns (optional): a field to spread across the top, such as year or status. Leave it at “(none)” for a simple grouped list.
- Values: what to calculate in each cell, such as the sum of revenue or a count of orders.
The table updates as you change any setting, with row, column and grand totals. Fields are pre-selected from your data, so you usually see a useful summary straight away.
Grouping dates
When a row or column field contains dates, group them by year, quarter or month to see trends, by “month of year” to compare seasons across years, or by weekday to see which days are busiest. Dates in ISO format (2026-03-14) are recognised; use the data cleaner to convert other formats first.
Percentages and heat map
“Show as” turns sums and counts into shares: of the grand total, of each row (what share of a region's sales each product makes) or of each column. The heat map shades cells by size so the biggest numbers stand out.
From pivot to chart
Chart this opens the result in the chart maker, already loaded. You can also download the pivot as CSV or Excel. For more complex summaries, such as filtering before grouping or calculating ratios, use SQL on CSV with GROUP BY or PIVOT.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a pivot table without Excel?
Open your CSV or Excel file on this page, choose a field for rows, optionally one for columns, and the value to sum, count or average. The pivot table is built instantly in your browser.
Can I count rows instead of summing a column?
Yes. Set Values to Count and the value field to “(rows)” to count rows, or pick a field to count its non-empty values. “Count distinct” counts unique values, such as unique customers per region.
How do I group dates by month in a pivot table?
Put the date column in Rows or Columns and set “Group dates by” to Month. Year, quarter, month of year and weekday are also available.
How many rows can it handle?
Files with hundreds of thousands of rows work in most browsers. The column field can have up to 80 different values; put fields with more values in Rows.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The pivot table is calculated in your browser and your file never leaves your computer.
